lesson 10: snack-time

i'm not sure why i feel compelled to write this post, but i really love snacks. i try to always have some snacks in my bag. i also like eating mostly healthy, with treats mixed in on the weekends and when i'm out and about doing social things. i'm on the go a lot and trying to eat healthy and stay hydrated on the go can be tough, i've definitely gotten home late after being caught unprepared snack-wise and devoured a block of cheese to curb my hunger before dinner. so, here are some of the snacks i like that can survive a day in my chock-full bag:

  • Justin's peanut butter packets. really filling and easy to eat while walking.
  • a piece of fruit: bananas and apples are my favorite
  • Trader Joe's PB + J bars. i just love these, as does my husband. they happen to also be gluten-free.
  • corn nuts. satisfying and salty.
  • i always carry a bottle of water. either this style like ban.do or my S'well bottle (which holds temperature foreverrrrrrr and is amazing), or this hidrate one, which tracks my water intake and also gives me gentle fun reminders to drink up.
  • to help even more with hydration which seems to be a permanent problem for me, i like these coconut water packets also: Coco Hydro.
  • oatmeal packets (all you need is hot water which most delis and cafes will happily give you)

if i'm on the run and have forgotten to pack a snack, i also like:

  • popcorn from Pret. they have nice small healthy bags of popcorn.
  • a piece of fruit or washed and cut mixed berries
  • a yogurt (greek style preferably because you get a lot of protein, but make sure you don't also get a lot of sugar. i like siggi's the best.)
  • a small salad like a chickpea salad, or orzo salad, or some kind of mini-meal salad
  • falafel balls
  • a juice or smoothie from a juice bar (Juice Generation, Liquiteria, Juice Press, Pressed Juicery, etc...)
  • oatmeal made with milk

if it's more of a "treat" day:

  • City Bakery hot chocolate with marshmallow (and if it's cold outside)
  • a corn muffin (i like all things corn if you can't tell)
  • a couple of munchkins (i know it's the same as a donut, but the small size makes me feel like i'm getting more)
  • buttery croissant
  • a bag of chips. i prefer Zapp's which are a little hard to find in NYC, but Potbelly is a consistent provider...if you're looking...

and if i'm home and have time to prepare a snack, or it would be too messy to pack:

  • homemade popcorn. on. the. stove. i drizzle a little butter and sometimes some truffle salt. addicted.
  • hard-boiled eggs
  • veggies and hummus or spinach dip
  • apple + peanut butter
  • ants on a log. you may remember these from your school lunches a decade or more ago, but it's really a satisfying snack for grown-ups too.
  • cheese + crackers, olives, veggies
  • chips and salsa
